From Baseball to the Battlefield

Ryan Davis grew up in Oklahoma, where hard work and sports shaped his early years. After graduating high school, he pursued college through a baseball scholarship, a path he wasn't initially thrilled about but embraced for the opportunities it offered. However, his life took a significant turn when he joined the Army in 2012, driven by a desire to serve and protect his country.

As an Army Ranger, Ryan completed five deployments, each filled with intense training, camaraderie, and a commitment to being the best. The lifestyle was grueling, demanding long periods away from his family, including his wife, Asia, and their young son, Knox. Despite the hardships, Ryan and Asia's relationship grew stronger, rooted in mutual respect and love.

A Life-Altering Night

On his fifth deployment, during what seemed like a routine raid, Ryan's life changed forever. An ambush left him catastrophically injured, with multiple wounds that would test his physical and mental limits. The explosion was so severe that Ryan lost both of his legs and his right arm, leaving him a triple amputee. The physical devastation was compounded by a multitude of other injuries, making survival itself a tremendous challenge.

What followed was a harrowing two-and-a-half-hour ordeal on the battlefield, where his fellow soldiers and medics performed heroic acts to keep him alive. Ryan underwent numerous life-saving procedures, including a groundbreaking blood transfusion directly on the battlefield—a testament to the advancements in combat medicine and the unwavering bond among soldiers.

“That great fear was rewarded with what comes on the other side of that. Face that fear and go out and enjoy it. It’ll be the sweetest enjoyment you’ve ever had because anything worth something is going to taste much better than something worth nothing.” - Ryan Davis

Ryan Davis joins Travel Talk With Joy to discuss his journey of recovery, life, and more.

The Road to Recovery

Ryan's recovery journey was long and grueling. He faced multiple surgeries, severe infections, and the immense challenge of adapting to life as a triple amputee. The physical pain was immense, but it was the emotional and mental challenges that truly tested him. Throughout it all, his faith and the love of his family, particularly his wife, Asia, kept him going.

One of the most poignant moments in Ryan's recovery was when he found solace in his faith. A nurse singing "Amazing Grace" brought him a sense of peace and renewed hope, a moment that Ryan describes as a turning point in his journey. Another significant moment came when then-President Donald Trump mentioned Ryan's name during a press conference, sparking a wave of support and recognition that lifted his spirits during a particularly dark time.

Redefining Life and Love

Ryan's experience has redefined how he approaches life and love. He speaks candidly about how his injuries have allowed him to love more deeply and appreciate the relationships in his life. His bond with his son, Knox, has strengthened, as Ryan now focuses on teaching him about character and resilience—lessons that go beyond physical strength.

His relationship with Asia, whom he affectionately calls "Rattlesnake," has also evolved. Despite his initial fears of being a burden, Asia's unwavering support and refusal to leave his side have solidified their partnership in ways Ryan never imagined. Their story is one of enduring love, resilience, and mutual respect.

Living Life as a Triple Amputee

Living as a triple amputee has not deterred Ryan from pursuing a life full of adventure and purpose. He continues to engage in activities like skiing and shooting, finding new ways to challenge himself and enjoy life. Ryan's approach to his disability is marked by a fierce determination not to let it define him or limit his experiences.

Traveling, which can be daunting for anyone, presents unique challenges for Ryan, especially when it comes to logistics with his wheelchair. However, he embraces the adventure, finding joy in cruises and other accessible travel options that allow his family to explore the world together.

A Life of Purpose

Today, Ryan is not just a survivor but a man on a mission. He has written a book titled Rattlesnake, which chronicles his journey and the lessons he has learned along the way. The book, set to be released later this year, is a tale of resilience, love, and the power of the human spirit. Ryan has also begun taking on public speaking engagements, sharing his story to inspire others and offer a message of hope and strength.
