After a late-night shift at a restaurant, he was driving home and was hit by a drunk driver, resulting in a severe spinal cord injury at the C 6-7 level. Despite dying twice during the following weeks, he was brought back to life with the help of incredible doctors and underwent extensive rehabilitation at the Lucerne Spinal Center in Orlando, Florida.

During his rehabilitation, Bert's Recreation Therapist played a crucial role in his recovery. She encouraged him to get involved in wheelchair sports, which reignited his passion for life and competition. This support system, combined with the love and encouragement from friends and family, helped Bert navigate the challenging transition back home.

Achievements in Wheelchair Racing
