If you're anything like me, you've probably wondered if group travel is actually accessible or just "accessible in theory." After spending a week in Costa Rica with Wheel the World, I want to share the unfiltered reality of what accessible group travel actually looks like – both the highlights and the honest challenges.

Before the Trip: Fears and Booking Experience

Before booking, my mind was filled with questions: What happens if a location isn't as accessible as advertised? Will I have to constantly explain my needs to strangers? Will I actually get to enjoy myself or will I be problem-solving the entire time? These concerns almost kept me from booking, but I'm so glad I took the chance.

The booking process was far more comprehensive than I expected. Unlike standard travel companies that treat accessibility as an afterthought, Wheel the World's booking system asked detailed questions about my specific needs upfront. They wanted to know particulars about my mobility equipment, exact assistance requirements, and even my comfort level with different activities. Their team even followed up with additional questions I hadn't thought to consider – like whether I prefer modified activities or adaptive equipment for certain experiences. This level of detail gave me confidence they weren't just checking accessibility boxes.

When it came to traveling with strangers, I was nervous about whether we would enjoy each other's company. This concern was quickly alleviated by the end of our first dinner together. We started sharing life stories, inside jokes developed, and genuine friendships formed. By the end of the trip, we were exchanging contact information and have discussed future adventures. The shared experience of traveling with accessibility considerations actually created stronger bonds than typical group travel.

On the Trip: Accessibility, Highlights, and Challenges

Now for what you really want to know – how accessible was it actually? The hanging bridges at Mistico Park included an accessible trail that allowed me to experience being high above the forest canopy – it was absolutely exhilarating and slightly nerve-wracking! I experienced a rainforest storm while crossing these bridges – something I never imagined would be possible.

The only location that proved somewhat challenging was the wildlife center, which had several hills throughout the property. This was fine for my mobility scooter, but those using manual chairs needed a little bit of assistance, which the guides were more than happy to provide. Their readiness to help without making it feel like a burden made all the difference.

Adaptive Adventures and Accessible Hotels

For the adaptive surfing experience in Manuel Antonio, they partnered with professional instructors who had extensive adaptive surfing experience. They assessed my abilities and customized the approach rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. I caught multiple waves independently!

I was genuinely impressed with all three hotels on our itinerary. Each featured roll-in showers and accessible rooms that actually delivered on their promises. Our guide regularly checked in to ensure everything met my specific needs, but I encountered no true challenges with the accommodations. The hotel in La Fortuna was an absolute standout – so comfortable and beautifully designed that I would have happily extended my stay for another week or two!

Transportation between locations demonstrated their expertise perfectly. Every vehicle transfer was pre-arranged with appropriate equipment, and our fantastic driver was clearly well-seasoned in navigating the tight turns of the Costa Rican mountains. Having consistent, knowledgeable transportation removed one of the biggest stressors of accessible travel.

Balance of Group Activities and Personal Time

One of my biggest concerns was not having enough "me time" to do my own thing on a guided group trip, but what I discovered was a refreshing balance. The guides checked in about assistance preferences at the start and respected my boundaries throughout. They created opportunities for alone time and built-in free periods to explore independently. I particularly appreciated the guide's flexibility in allowing us to schedule our own activities. I was thrilled to book a massage and enjoy some blissful downtime – exactly the relaxation I needed in the middle of our adventure-packed itinerary.

"The unexpected moments often became the most memorable..."

The unexpected moments often became the most memorable: impromptu conversations with locals about accessibility in Costa Rican culture, cooking alongside new friends at a farm-to-table restaurant near Arenal Volcano, a surprise encounter with Miss Universe Costa Rica before my flight home, and impromptu stops throughout the trip to witness local animals in action.
