Our Wheelchair Accessible Experience of Butler County

We’re the Murphy family, Richard, Kristen, and our two sons, Harrison (age 13) and Chandler (age 9).
We visited Butler County through Wheel the World and had a great time exploring together. Since Richard uses a power wheelchair full-time, accessibility is a big part of our travel experience. Butler County made it easy for all of us to enjoy the trip.
What's Ahead?

Our Trip Highlights
One of our favorite things was the Butler County Donut Trail. We loved trying different donut shops and finding our favorites. It was a fun way to kick off our visit and start the day with something sweet.
We spent time at Liberty Center, where the kids had fun with the splash pad. Chandler especially loved the outdoor ping-pong table. It was set up in a way that Richard could play with him, which made it extra special.
Another highlight was the Voice of America MetroPark. Our whole family got out on the water. Kristen took a pedal boat, while Richard, Harrison, and Chandler went kayaking. The accessible kayak launch made it easy and safe to get Richard in and out of the kayak, and Harrison loved relaxing on the water.
We also went to the Holiday Auto Theatre drive-in, where the kids got to experience an old-school movie night. It was fun for all of us to enjoy a movie under the stars.
At Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, we had a picnic and walked around to see the unique art pieces. It was beautiful, peaceful, and easy to get around.
Before we left, we made sure to stop at Jungle Jim’s International Market. Chandler was all about the candy, and Harrison loved looking at all the different sodas. The whole store was full of fun surprises from around the world.
We’re so thankful for the accessible experiences in Butler County. This trip gave us the chance to do so many things together as a family. We had a blast and can’t wait to come back.

Butler County is Verified for Accessibility
Travel Butler County has teamed up with Wheel the World to assess accessibility across the county, earning them the seal of approval called "Destination Verified." In fact, Butler County is the first destination in Ohio to earn this verification status.
What Does This Mean, Exactly?
What this means is that an expert mapper goes to several hotels, attractions, parks, and restaurants to map important accessibility details. People with disabilities can then see this information, determine whether something works for their needs, and book.
To give you a picture of what this looks like, let's talk about hotels. Each hotel has about 200 data points and measurements taken – along with photos – which is then all turned into a listing for you to see. So, when you see that the bed height is 24 inches high, there is a roll-in shower with a seat and grab bars, the hotel pool has a lift, and the height of the toilet is 18 in. high – you can trust that the information you see is accurate.

Butler County's Commitment to Accessibility
As an Accessibility Verified destination, Butler County is committed to welcoming all visitors of all abilities. The detailed information you see on numerous attractions, hotels, and restaurants across the county acts as a way for people with disabilities to make good travel decisions for themselves. Because accessibility is not one size-fits-all. What works for you may not work for another, and vice versa.
But, it's not just about booking a hotel that suits your needs. It is about opening up Butler County's destination by providing better experiences for everyone.
“This achievement reflects a continued commitment to enhancing the travel experience for visitors to explore with confidence and enjoy new experiences in Butler County’s vibrant communities.”
– Tracy Kocher, president & CEO of Travel Butler County
